If you’re as big of an engineering nerd as we are, you probably spend a lot of your free time thinking about or researching engineering (which is probably how you stumbled upon this blog). When we feel like kicking back and relaxing in front of the TV, our favourite shows also focus on the marvellous impacts of engineering in our world! We have put together a list of some of the best TV shows that celebrate engineering in case you’re looking for something new to watch that scratches the engineering itch.

Impossible Engineering

A documentary series that explores incredible feats of modern-day engineering and introduces the pioneers whose techniques changed the world. Each episode follows extraordinarily advanced structures, explaining their mechanics and designs with 3-D graphics, archived sources and specially shot footage. Impossible Engineering truly celebrates both the engineer and their innovations. To top it all off, the show is still in production, meaning new episodes will be at your fingertips!

Megastructures

This series takes an educational look at the construction, operation and staffing of various megastructures from around the world. Episodes contain valuable interviews with designers and project managers about critical details ranging from difficulties in different stages of building the structures to how different aspects of the structures operate on a day to day basis. Megastructures love to look at the biggest, tallest and longest structures in the world so prepare to marvel at the extremes of the industry!

Big, Bigger, Biggest

A documentary series that focuses on breakthroughs in engineering and where they have led us to today! Big, Bigger, Biggest looks at the steps in progress and their magnitude makes us optimistic and excited for future innovations in engineering! Although the series focuses on monumental events in the past, it always gets us thinking about the future.

How it’s Made

It’s very likely that you have heard of or even watched this show. How it’s Made paved the way for many engineering centred shows that we see across TV! With a current total of 416 episodes, there is tonnes to learn on this show. The processes behind everyday items are always hidden pockets of incredible engineering feats. From engines to handbags, this series covers so many different items and the amazing machines and processes that bring them to life!

Nazi Megastructures

A spin-off of the previously mentioned Megastructures, Nazi Megastructures looks at the engineering secrets that went on to spark a technological revolution that changed warfare forever. The Nazis built some of the biggest and most deadly pieces of military hardware in history and this show dives deep into how engineers and industrialists like Werner von Braun, Ferdinand Porsche and Alfred Krupp under the direction of Adolf Hitler built these enormous terror machines, high-tech superguns and weapons of mass destruction.
